Dr. Stephen Besh recently joined The West Clinic as a Hematology Oncology specialist. Originally from Slidell, Louisiana, Dr. Besh received his medical training at Louisiana State University Medical School and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Upon completion of his residency in 1993, Dr. Besh moved to Memphis where he worked as an emergency room physician for the Regional Medical Center for approximately two years.

Prior to moving to Memphis, Dr. Besh and three of his friends who were also physicians discussed their mutual vision to open a clinic for disadvantaged patients. That vision became a reality in 1994 when they opened Christ Community Medical Clinic, Inc., a Christian community-based health services program that provides more than 24,000 patient visits annually to Memphians who reside in two inner-city neighborhoods. Dr. Besh practiced internal medicine at the clinic for six years where he became interested in oncology. He returned to the University of Alabama where he completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology. There he participated in research on lymphoma and his findings were published in several peer-reviewed publications.

Following his fellowship training, Dr. Besh returned to Memphis where he began his practice as a hematology oncology specialist. Dr. Besh’s approach to patient care involves treating the whole person, not just the disease. He feels his experience in internal medicine for many years has prepared him for his role as an oncologist. He is an intent listener, listening to what his patients say and often what they don’t say.

Dr. Besh and his wife, Emily, enjoy spending time with their four children. It is an honor to have Dr. Stephen Besh on The West Clinic’s team of specialists.
