Dr. Schwartzberg completed his Fellowship in Medical Oncology/Hematology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York where he also served as Chief Resident in Medicine. He attended medical college at the New York Medical College after receiving B.A. and M.S. degrees from State University of New York at Buffalo. He is board certified in Hematology and Oncology and holds medical licenses in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and New York. Dr. Schwartzberg joined The West Clinic in 1987.
Dr. Schwartzberg sees patients in our Humphreys office. The individual, not the disease, always comes first to Dr. Schwartzberg. He recognizes and respects the variety of issues that come into play for both the patient and family when dealing with a serious illness. Getting to know the patient is an enriching part of the treatment process for him. When it comes to treatment, he believes in being aggressive when it is appropriate to do so.
Because he is never content to follow, seeking rather to lead, Dr. Schwartzberg heads The West Clinic’s research efforts. He is totally committed to translating the advances of research into positive benefits for the patients of The West Clinic. Initially, he chose a research career path and earned an advanced degree in biochemistry before realizing that directly helping patients benefit from his findings was infinitely more rewarding. Oncology attracted his interest because in a progressive practice like The West Clinic, it enables a physician to combine care and compassion with cutting edge research.
In addition to an active patient schedule and research at The West Clinic, he serves as:
A devoted family man, he and his wife, Sharon, have two young adult daughters, Allison and Kara. He is active in his synagogue, and for more than a decade he has volunteered his expertise for patients at the Church Health Center. His prowess on the tennis court is well documented. What is lesser known is that he is one of the original founders and the keyboard player for Oasis, one of the Memphis area’s more popular rock bands.
